Dearborn Closure, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
April 13-14, 2012

The Paleontological Research Institute in Ithaca, NY was founded back in 1932 and set up shop on Cornell University's North Campus, later they moved to the Independent Order of Odd Fellow's old orphanage where they currently preside. The old building was subsequently used as storage for the geology department, but after years of clutter the building is deemed to be no longer financially viable and set to be torn down. The collections inside where distributed to other facilities, universities, and the PRI but not everything could be kept. As such the university was giving away the rest of the collection in hopes that the great mineralogical & petrological collections would not be completely lost. The Sholesonian managed to gain a few drawers of material (with labels!) and continues to expand. A glimpse into some of the recent acquisitions can be seen below:

Family Fun Day, Museum of the Earth, Ithaca, NY
September 24, 2011 


Those of you not keeping tabs on our Facebook pages should enjoy knowing that our Family Fun Day exhibit was a complete success! On Saturday September 24, 2011 at Ithaca, NY's Museum of the Earth, the Sholesonian set up a table for their Family Fun Day. With a variety of treasures from all six of our collections, patrons were able to enjoy all the unique items. Check out the photos of the event below and click on a photo to enlarge it!   

Summer Symposium, Museum of the Earth, Ithaca, NY
August 5-6, 2011

So for those who didn't hear, the Sholesonian recently made a presentation on its collection and outreach effort at the Summer Symposium 2011 at the Paleontological Research Institute. I gave a brief overview on what I do with this site as well as giving a quick look on how to make your own insect or fossil collection.
