Collections of Historical and Cultural Significance
To search for "History Quotes" means to delve into a sea of opinions on the follies, mythology, and prejudices of history. But alas, it does not need to be so. History is the events and conditions of the past and through the Sholesonian's Historical Significance Collection, our history will be preserved through artifacts that tell stories of how the world was. Alex Haley was quoted, "History is written by the winners," which in some unfortunate sense tends to be true. Some very notable figures tend to be long forgotten with the passage of time, but it's through these artifacts and exhibits that the museum tries to tear down the misinformation and present the truth.
People use lots of everyday items that we all take for granted, but think of how drastically the world will change in twenty years. How about 50? 100? What will the world be like in 3220? It seems so far into the future, but so did 2012 to the writers of the declaration of independence. 'Antiques' nowadays are old items that are no longer used, so think about how the items you use everyday will perceived in 100 years. Your iPhone or Mountain Dew bottle will become very collectible after they've been replaced over and over again with improvements. It is with this philosophy that the Sholesonian wishes to preserve the present so that in the future that past will be remembered for what it was.
With this idea of holding onto the present artifacts as well as preserving past artifacts comes, why bother at all? Not only do we wish to seek out the truth in past events, but also to explore the different cultures of the world and how they evolve over time. How has style or food choices changed since the birth of the nation? What was the mindset that influenced technology or education at the time. Because of this the Sholesonian groups together its items of cultural importance with its historical significance so the past, present, and future shall not be forgotten.
